0005 - Demo Location

Andi Lamprecht Andi Lamprecht ·· 2 min read· Draft

This post outlines the two candidate locations for an upcoming military demonstration. The demo is a pitch to military stakeholders for a product that equips them to detect, track, and respond to unmanned aircraft operating in the airspace overlying their jurisdiction(s).

Candidate Locations

Fort McNair — Washington, D.C.

Fort McNair (Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall annex) sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers in Southwest D.C. It is home to the National Defense University and U.S. Army Military District of Washington.

Airspace considerations:

  • Located within the Washington, D.C. Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) and Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ)
  • Proximity to Reagan National Airport (DCA) and restricted airspace over federal buildings
  • High-value, high-sensitivity environment — closely mirrors real-world military installation protection requirements

Demo relevance: The constrained, highly regulated airspace makes this an authentic scenario for demonstrating airspace protection over a DoD installation in an urban/federal environment.

Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW)

The DFW area offers several military installation options, including Naval Air Station Fort Worth (JRB) and nearby Army/Reserve facilities. The region provides a large, operationally flexible environment.

Airspace considerations:

  • Class B airspace surrounding DFW International Airport
  • NAS Fort Worth JRB has its own Class D airspace
  • More open terrain compared to D.C., enabling a broader operational footprint for the demo

Demo relevance: The larger geographic area supports demonstrations of wide-area airspace monitoring and jurisdiction boundary management, with less permitting complexity than the D.C. FRZ.

Both locations involve controlled or restricted airspace. Coordination with FAA and relevant installation commanders will be required well in advance of any live flight demonstration.
